Main Purpose and Function:
Known as the “living room of the Downtown Eastside,” Carnegie Centre offers educational, recreational, cultural and social programming for the benefit of low income people of the Downtown Eastside.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Security Coordinator, the Security Attendant I is responsible for ensuring a safe, welcoming and accessible environment for patrons and staff, and for the security of the premises. This requires monitoring patron behavior to ensure that the Centre’s rules and standards of behavior are being observed; monitoring entrances, restricting entrance to those under the influence of drugs or alcohol, exhibiting aggressive or unacceptable behavior, or whose entry is restricted for other reasons; ongoing building patrol; providing first aid; working cooperatively with police, fire and emergency medical services in emergency situations; assisting patrons in a supportive manner by providing information and referrals on both community and Centre services and activities; assisting the Information Clerk as needed; monitoring and assisting with programs and events; recording problems and communicating information to other staff using reporting procedures; operating a two-way radio; maintaining health and safety standards; and performing other duties as required.
Applicants must display experience in providing quality security and/or patron support services (preferably in a community, social service or health care environment serving marginalized people). Ability to enforce rules with firmness, tact, and diplomacy; take effective measures in emergency situations; defuse/de-escalate volatile situations; exercise good judgment; have strength and agility to physically manage situations as required; communicate effectively with a diverse population; understand and follow written and verbal instructions; make written reports; work with minimal supervision; develop good working relations with patrons and staff; understand the needs and problems of patrons; and to exercise compassion. Violence Prevention is a priority at Carnegie and the Security Team is expected to use defusing/de-escalating skills when responding to all volatile situations. Physical intervention is always a last resort.
Minimum Position Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 10 (Grade 12 would be preferred);
- Knowledge of the Downtown Eastside community, local agencies and services;
- Knowledge of the Carnegie Community Centre and its services;
- Experience working in a community, social service or healthcare environment would be considered assets.
- Occupational First Aid Level I Certification or the ability to earn one;
- Security BST training;
- Security Officer License;
- Violence Prevention training;
- A Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A Clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position.
