Stewart McDannold Stuart is committed to using its extensive experience in local government and other areas of law, to work on behalf of local governments throughout the Province. We offer practical, cost effective advice and full legal services to all forms of local government, including municipalities, regional districts, regional health authorities, regional hospital districts, improvement districts, water and sewer boards, and school districts. Our clientele is restricted to local governments and related bodies, and provincial ministries and Crown corporations.
Preferred Area of Practice
Solicitor's Services: providing interpretation on all legislation affecting local government including the Community Charter and Local Government Act, drafting and reviewing bylaws, contracts, real estate transactions and advice on municipal, planning and environmental law as well as other subjects of interest to local governments.
Litigation: both plaintiff and defence at all levels of the Court system and before administrative tribunals, including bylaw enforcement, planning, injunctions, Charter of Rights, construction and engineering, contract, elections, environmental, expropriation, insurance and negligence.
Labour Relations: including employment and dismissal law, negotiating collective agreements, grievance and arbitration proceedings and applications to the Labour Relations Board.
Municipal corporate and financial advice: management consulting and administrative advice, including briefs to provincial and federal government commissions and agencies, in house training and seminars for both appointed and elected officials.
Area of Service
We act for local government in all parts of British Columbia. We are based in Victoria within walking distance of the Courthouse, Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, and other government offices, and we travel to our clients throughout the Province.
