Show & Tell: Integrating Human Rights Into Learning Design

Institute for Performance and Learning
Hosted by the Vancouver Island Chapter

On March 1st 2:00 pm PST via Zoom, the Vancouver Island chapter of I4PL is pleased to present an interactive learning session with Sharon Thira, of BC’s Office of the Human Rights Commissioner (BCOHRC). The session will focus on the methods we use in our educational design work.

The B.C. Human Rights Code protects your human rights in all spheres of life - economic, social, political and cultural. As British Columbians, it is important that we all know what the Code protects and what remedies it offers. But human rights is more than just a legal concept. It is a philosophy of life that at its core, values humanity and equality. As learning design professionals, we can easily "tell" about the Code. We can also teach in ways that "show" what egalitarianism is.

The session will focus on the methods we use in our educational design work. Working collaboratively, we will suggest ways that we can teach human rights without ever speaking directly about rights. What are egalitarian teaching approaches and how do we test our work to ensure that we are not implicitly supporting unequal learning structures? We will use our time together to hear from the presenter and then break out into group discussions on how we can utilize these methods to strengthen the knowledge of our learners.

Please note that this is a focus on BC but Human Rights principles are global so all are welcome to attend.
