Building Technologist

Salary: $6,730 – 7,011 – 7,319 – 7,629 – 7,946/month

Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:45 PM (Nine-Day Fortnight)

This is specialized technical work entailing responsibility for the provision of an effective plan checking service to ensure that proposed complex construction projects, alterations and additions to existing buildings and structures meet the general design and life safety standards of the municipality prior to the issuance of building permits. The Building Technologist examines plans accompanying applications for permits; discusses plans, proposed projects and non conformance issues with applicants; clarifies problem areas; interprets and explains building code, regulations and bylaws and reviews methods of revising plans to conform to same. Liaises with City inspection staff and contractors during building construction regarding code interpretations, substitutability and equivalency of building materials, and revisions to approved plans; carries out joint inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Provides assistance to departmental staff engaged in plan review matters and participates in the development of departmental and inspection staff in matters related to Interpretation of the building code. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology, plus considerable related experience in the building construction industry or municipal field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the pertinent sections of the building code, bylaws, and related departmental policies and procedures. Considerable knowledge of building construction and materials. Working knowledge of the BC Fire Code and Fire Services Act. Ability to read and understand plans, drawings and specifications and to suggest corrections and changes where required; perform mathematical calculations; interpret and apply the building code, bylaws, regulations, and City planning guidelines and policies and to effectively explain same to a variety of external contacts. Ability to coordinate the processing of applications through relevant City departments to ensure the timely completion of same, to perform routine inspections as required, and to liaise with said departments to facilitate same; to deal effectively with a wide variety of staff, owners, builders, professional people and the general public; and to participate in the review of policies and bylaws. A Building Officials' Association of British Columbia, Level 3 Qualification and a Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
