Our Fleet Department are looking for two experienced and motivated individuals to join our team maintaining and repairing a varied fleet consisting of approximately 225 Public Works, Fire / Rescue and other specialized vehicles. This is commercial transport/heavy duty mechanical work at the journeyman level, involving maintenance, repair and overhaul of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment both in the shop and in the field.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Proficiency in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of diesel and gas engines plus transmissions all with electronic control, along with a thorough knowledge and understanding of air brake, electrical and electronic systems.
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience is preferred, and the successful candidate must possess their own hand tools.
  • Experience with welding and small-scale fabrication would be considered an asset.


Qualifications
The successful candidate will at a minimum have completed Grade 10 and possess Interprovincial Red Seal or Trades Qualification for the Province of British Columbia as a Commercial Transport, Truck and Transport or Heavy Duty Mechanic. Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate.  A valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement is required. Candidates who do not possess a Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement are still eligible but are required to obtain this classification within 6 months of being appointed.

The District of North Vancouver supports continued education and development in areas of interest for all of its employees.  The Fleet Department provides great opportunities for training including dealer training on newly purchased fleet equipment.

Candidates who have not yet achieved but have interest in obtaining the above qualifications and certifications are encouraged to apply.  Candidates under the following circumstances may be considered:

  • Heavy Duty/Truck and Transport Apprentices in final year of apprenticeship
  • Automotive Service Technicians who are willing to convert to Truck and Transport Mechanic
  • Candidates who have not yet acquired a Class 3 Drivers Licence with Air Brake Endorsement
  • Candidates who have not yet acquired a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate

Salary:
The hourly rate for this unionized position is $50.06 per hour which is $104,128.80 annualized (2024 rates) plus $0.75 per hour shift differential, tool allowance and an extended benefits package including pension. 
Hours of Work: Hours of work are Monday to Friday from 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with some Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on a 2-week rotation.
