Posting Date: October 11, 2017
Year Published: 2017
Abstract:
The document is a detailed, comprehensive guide on what should be considered in environmental planning at a community and site level in order to maintain environmental values during development of urban and rural lands. Background information is provided on the importance of maintaining natural capital and ecosystem services during land development. The document includes information on: environmental mapping and inventory; connection to human health; heritage and First Nation interests; incentives and stewardship; cumulative impacts; wildlife corridors and buffers; development near farmland; urban forests; and restoration and enhancement. Region specific information is provided that reflects locally relevant issues and area specific guidelines. A list of environmentally valuable resources is included with sample terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and species at risk that may be affected by urban and rural development. The document is a valuable and detailed resource for environmental planning in BC.

The Guideline provides specific information on environmental protection that can be used for developing community planning documents and for review and approval of site specific development proposals or applications. Sample objectives and policies are useful for long range planning. The guidelines for site development and management, together with the provision of checklists for site surveys, are useful for those proposing and approving development proposals.
