City of Fort St. John Invests in Emergency Services Building

City of Fort St. John
FORT ST. JOHN, BC - Fort St. John City Council is pleased to announce the acquisition of a 10,000-square-foot property located at 10904 100 Avenue, formerly known as Wolverine Motors, to serve as a dedicated emergency services building. This strategic move marks a significant milestone in bolstering the community's response capabilities.

Initially slated for construction on City-owned land near the South Lagoons, acquiring the existing property aligns with the city's commitment to prudent fiscal management while ensuring it addresses the needed emergency services infrastructure.

Mayor Lilia Hansen stated, "This acquisition not only provides an immediate solution to our pressing need for additional emergency services infrastructure but also demonstrates our dedication to optimizing resources for the benefit of our community."

The project, outlined in the 2024 Budget, was allocated a budget of $3 million for design and construction. However, acquiring the property has resulted in substantial cost savings, with the final purchase price negotiated at $1.87 million. This prudent financial decision not only facilitates the immediate utilization of the facility but also underscores Council's commitment to delivering value to taxpayers.

City staff are working on a lease agreement with North Peace Search and Rescue for a portion of the facility, while the Fort St. John Fire Department will utilize the remaining space. North Peace Search and Rescue is indispensable in our region, serving as a critical lifeline for outdoor enthusiasts and workers. In an area renowned for its picturesque landscapes and abundant recreational opportunities, their dedication and proficiency in search, rescue, and emergency response operations mitigate inherent risks and provide essential support to our residents, workers, and visitors.

The acquisition of the emergency services building is not just a strategic move but a tangible step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. The City of Fort St. John remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all residents.
