Financial Controller


Established in 2007, Splatsin Development Corporation manages the economic interests of the Splatsin First Nations throughout the Secwepemcúle̓ cw (Shuswap). CURRENT OPPORTUNITY:
The Splatsin Development Corporation is seeking a Financial Controller to oversee all financial and accounting compliance for the Corporation and its affiliated LLPs. This role involves ensuring that financial administration systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls are well-designed and functioning effectively. Reporting to the CEO, the Financial Controller will supervise the preparation and maintenance of financial records, reporting systems, annual budgets, and facilitate annual audits. They will also evaluate financial systems annually,
recommending improvements to mitigate financial risks and ensuring adherence to approved procedures.

Additionally, the Financial Controller will prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, monitor compliance with agreements and funding arrangements, and provide necessary documentation to the Board of Directors.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Management
  • Oversee all company accounts and investments.
  • Monitor and report on investments.
  • Develop budgets and financial plans based on research and data reports.
  • Manage cash flow by tracking transactions and regularly reviewing internal reports.

Compliance and Auditing
  • Collaborate with auditing services to ensure proper compliance with all regulations.
  • Establish and implement financial reporting systems to comply with government regulations and legislation, including the Splatsin Financial Administration Law, 2011.
  • Actively monitor compliance with agreements and funding arrangements entered into by the Companies.

  Reporting and Analysis
  • Report to the CEO with timely and accurate financial information.
  • Assist the CEO in presenting reports to senior executives, stakeholders, and board members.
  • Prepare the required monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Create systems to prevent errors in data collection and calculations.
  • Communicate financial metrics to senior management.

Financial Controls and Systems
  • Develop and manage financial controls in accordance with the company’s procedures.
  • Suggest updates and improvements for accounting systems, including payroll and invoicing/receivable and payables.
  • Review all financial plans and budgets regularly to look for cost reduction opportunities.
  • Examine all financial reports and data closely to check for discrepancies.

Leadership
  • Participate in the development of and support the company’s strategic plans.
  • Supervise and manage financial department staff, including accountants, financial assistants, accounts receivable, and accounts payable departments.
  • Motivate and lead finance team members by clarifying roles and providing helpful feedback.
  • Manage the preparation of payroll for personnel.
  • Oversee Quilakwa Investments Manager.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certified Professional Accounting Designation required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, with a strong emphasis on financial reporting and compliance.
  • Knowledge and experience working with a First Nations organization.
  • Extensive experience in job costing, including up-to-date knowledge of job costing and Sage software.
  • Demonstrated financial reporting skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of general accounting principles, including cost accounting, inventory control, margin analysis, and consolidations
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with strong decision-making capability.
  • Proficiency with JDE and Dynamics AX considered assets.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including Power BI.
  • Knowledge of the forestry industry considered an asset.

TOTAL REWARDS:
  • Annual Base Salary: $100,000 - $120,000, based on skill set and experience.
