Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications for a Senior Environmental Analyst in the Environmental Services Division within the Strategic Services Department. This is a temporary full-time opportunity expected to end on April 30, 2025, with a possibility of extension up to 2 years in duration.

General Information
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Services, the Senior Environmental Analyst is responsible for performing a wide variety of senior analytical and technical tasks and project work related to environmental policy development and planning. Work includes researching, analyzing, and preparing technical reports, environmental field studies, assisting with coordinating and facilitating various public and/or stakeholder meetings, preparing grant applications, communications program development, and assists with the overall development, preparation, implementation, project management and staff management of the Environmental Services Division.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a degree in environmental management, environmental planning, ecology, or Restoration of Natural Systems
  • A minimum eight (8) years of progressive related experience, including experience supervisory experience
  • Valid BC Driver’s License
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 with CPR or equivalent
  • Member of the Association of Professional Biologists or other related professional association is an asset
  • Experience working in or with local governments is preferred
  • Experience in green building design - LEED Accreditation an asset
  • Experience working with business, community, special interest and multi stakeholder groups under a community based social marketing or community-based science program is considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

Hours of Work: Guaranteed 35 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and eligible for flex time. This position may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings.

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the CVRD has a Work From Home program. This program allows staff to work remotely, with the number of remote days per week determined by operational requirements, from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a CVRD worksite. This position works from the CVRD's main office in Duncan, BC, and at this time, is eligible to be part of the Work From Home program, potentially working a hybrid in-office / remote schedule after a successful in-office training period.

Salary: Wage rate in 3 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $51.35 - $52.89 - $54.44 per hour (2024 rates). Benefits (or 6% pay in lieu of benefits until eligible) and 6% pay in lieu of vacation are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
