Facilities Maintenance Technician


The City of Courtenay invites applications for a full-time position of "Facilities Maintenance Technician”. This is a union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
 
The Facilities Maintenance Technician performs general maintenance and repair work to City owned buildings, as well as basic construction and renovation projects; oversees the work of contracted labour and tradespersons; and assists in the creation & implementation of preventative maintenance programs and in the preparation of budgets and cost estimates. Works both independently and as a member of a team.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12 education, or equivalent, supplemented by an Interprovincial Red Seal designation in a building systems maintenance related field, ie: Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC, or Plumbing.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
  • A minimum of 3 years (within the last 5 years) post-journeyperson experience performing general building and operating systems maintenance and repairs.
  • Some experience overseeing the work of co-workers and contractors
  • Thorough knowledge of building and operating systems construction, installation, maintenance and repair practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of WorkSafe BC Occupational Health & Safety Regulations.
  • Current knowledge of applicable construction codes (BC Building, BC Plumbing, Canadian Electrical)
  • Strong office computer and mobile technology skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in, and contribute to a team approach and environment, as well as work independently as required.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with City staff, the public, and outside agencies and partners.
  • Physical abilities as required by the job, including operate hand and power tools, lift and carry heavy loads (up to 50lbs), work from ladders, scaffolding, & aerial equipment, and work outside in various weather conditions

 
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRING

  • Job-related training, including safety, skills development, and maintenance of certifications, which may include Asbestos Awareness, Fall Protection, Aerial & Scissor Lift Operator, Confined Space Entry, Occupational First Aid, and WHMIS.
  • BCMSA Municipal Worker Safety certificate
  • Specialized technical certification such as Building Systems Maintenance Certificate (BOMI) 

 
The current hourly wage rate is $40.71.  This is a full-time position; start date to be determined.
