Engineering Technologist

Scope
Reporting to the Transportation Networks and Development Team Lead, this intermediate technical and administrative position provides support and technical assistance to the Transportation Infrastructure Section and various other sections, divisions, and departments in performing moderately complex technical work related to the completion of a variety of transportation engineering activities and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Meet and liaise with internal staff and externally with consultants, contractors, and the public about transportation capital projects.
  • Perform technical duties in the review of transportation engineering plans to confirm compliance with the Engineering Design Criteria and Standards and review and recommend any exceptions and variances.
  • Review, provide comments and confirm compliance of Transportation Impact Analysis (TIA) for development applications and neighbourhood areas.
  • Review transportation engineering and planning designs, perform field inspections, undertake technical assessments, collect and analyze technical data, and conduct research as required.
  • Prepare conceptual designs and sketches for transportation infrastructure including alignments and cross sections.
  • Apply and support transportation policies and principles from the Surrey Transportation Plan, Vision Zero Road Safety plan and other aspects of urban transportation work undertaken within the section including transit, walking and cycling.
  • Maintain and enhance traffic microsimulation models for optimizing intersection and corridor operations. Convert modelling outputs to signal timing plans for implementation.


Qualifications

  • Completion of a one-year certificate in a discipline of Engineering Technology relevant to the position from a recognized post-secondary institution with 3 years engineering experience with a demonstrated record of technical knowledge, skills and abilities or an equivalent combination of related training and experience OR
  • Completion of a two-year diploma in a discipline of Engineering Technology relevant to the position from a recognized post secondary institution with exposure to relevant engineering work.
  • An ability to operate computer equipment and software as applied to the work performed and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to adapt to a wide variety of stakeholders, including internal municipal staff.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in all aspects of sustainable multi-modal transportation and enjoy working in a collaborative and high performing environment.
  • This position requires a valid B.C. driver’s license.
