The MIABC is looking for an energetic, motivated, and career-minded financial professional who is looking for a progressive leadership opportunity. We are a member-owned non-profit insurance reciprocal that provides liability coverage to over 170 local governments in British Columbia, and property and ancillary coverage to over half of our members. 
 
Job Duties:

  • Establishes and monitors internal controls to ensure the accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory and reporting obligations.
  • Manages accounting operations including the review of reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax and statutory reporting.
  • Coordinates the interim and year-end audit and prepares financial statements for audit.
  • Prepares and submits quarterly and annual regulatory filings to the regulator.
  • Supervises and mentors accounting staff.
  • Monitors and manages cash flow.
  • Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
  • Interacts with the management team to provide consultative support to planning and strategic initiatives through financial analyses and reports.
  • Prepares the annual budget and analyzes variances.
  • Develops and implements accounting policies and best practices.
  • Provides accurate quarterly financial statements, reports, and schedules to the CFO, actuary, reinsurers, and Finance Committee. 
  • Optimizes the handling of banking relationships and initiates appropriate strategies to enhance cash positions.
  • Liaises with the property manager on financial aspects of the commercial strata.
  • Maintains and updates the accounting system and makes changes as required.
  • Remains abreast of company, industry and regulatory changes as well as changes in internal processes and procedures.
  • Serves as a member of the management team, providing input at regular management meetings, working on a variety of MIABC projects and chairing an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) group.
  • Follows and ensures compliance with the MIABC’s policies and procedures.
  • Cooperates and collaborates with other employees and members in a spirit of teamwork and collegiality.
  • Maintains member and MIABC confidentiality.
  • Promotes and represents MIABC as a professional association.
  • Other miscellaneous duties and special projects as assigned.


  Preferred qualifications include:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a management-level accounting role.
  • University degree, preferably in Finance or Accounting. 
  • CPA (CA/CGA/CMA) designation mandatory.
  • Knowledge of IFRS, budgeting practices, financial and accounting reporting systems and CRA regulations.
  • Effective leadership skills with a strong focus on operations and business processes.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Professional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical skills. Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • High level or critical and logical thinking, analysis and reasoning. High degree of integrity.
  • Well-defined sense of diplomacy, including conflict resolution and people management skills.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office 365 programs (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.).

Pay Range:  $113,680 - $142,100 depending on experience.
