Indigenous Advisor


The Indigenous Advisor position is rooted in the guiding principles of Truth and Reconciliation as outlined by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. We recognize and respect that the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) lies within the unceded tm̓xʷúlaʔxʷ (land)of the syilx / Okanagan people. We acknowledge that colonialism has significantly impacted Indigenous peoples and their connections to the land. As a Local Government, we are learning and building better relationships with the syilx and other Indigenous people in the region.
 
We are looking for someone to provide leadership and guidance in moving local government Reconciliation actions forward, as well as building strong government to government relationships with syilx communities in the Central Okanagan.
 
You will:

  1. Develop an RDCO Reconciliation and Indigenous Relations Framework.
  2. Build RDCO’s cultural competency by fostering opportunities to learn about and work with syilx and urban Indigenous communities.
  3. Strengthen local government to government relationships with syilx communities in the Central Okanagan, with a focus on inclusive regional governance.
  4. Contribute to RDCO communication and engagement activities for programs and projects that impact syilx communities and urban Indigenous communities within the Central Okanagan.

 
As a requirement to be successful in the role, you will identify as Indigenous, have 5 years’ experience in community engagement or community building including Indigenous relations, exceptional cultural understanding of sylix / Okanagan communities in the Central Okanagan and knowledge of how to build relationships with these communities in the context of Local Government.
 
In addition, you will have excellent communication skills with the ability to create content for technical, educational, and corporate communication collateral. You will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with various peoples. These skills, along with your bachelor’s degree or professional designation in public administration, political science, communications or related field will make you an exceptional candidate for the role.

This is an exempt position that has a salary range of $89,064 - $98,960 - $108,856. It is the RDCO’s philosophy to pay in the middle of the range for a fully qualified applicant.
