Planner I or Planner II

Employment Opportunity – Cranbrook, B.C.

Do you have a passion for engaging with the public and working to develop policies that facilitate the realization of community visions? The Developmental Services Department is looking for two experienced and customer service focused Planners who are open to the challenges of land use planning in rural and resort communities to join our long range planning team. These positions are based out of our Cranbrook Office.

Reporting to the Planning Supervisor, the Planners will be responsible for policy and project work, including leading comprehensive planning projects, facilitating community engagement and preparing reports and recommendations for the Board of Directors. There is also potential for professional growth through mentoring and providing guidance to current planning and junior staff.

The ideal candidate(s) will have experience in community planning and have familiarity with land use planning in rural BC, leading public engagement and facilitating dialogue with First Nations, the public and stakeholders in complex planning project such as OCP reviews or new policy development.

Qualifications for candidates include: eligibility for candidate or certified membership status in the Planning Institute of BC, a Planning undergraduate degree, a valid Driver’s Licence and prior experience in land use planning. Minimum experience qualifications, preferably in a local government setting, for the position are:

Planner I (Planner) - $43.43/hr - $45.59/hr

  • One year experience


Planner IA (Sustainability Initiatives Planner) – $44.72/hr - $46.95/hr

  • Two years experience
  • This position includes a strong focus on climate initiatives


Planner II (Senior Planner) - $47.44/hr - $49.83/hr

  • Five years experience


Key Skills & Abilities:

  • Designing & implementing engagement processes utilizing in person and virtual opportunities;
  • Maintain composure and find solutions when dealing with contentious issues;
  • Application of sustainability principles for community & corporate initiatives, including measuring & reporting of greenhouse gas emissions (Planner IA level);
  • Proficiently manage consultants and contracts (Planner II level);
  • Respond to public, Board and media inquiries in a professional manner;
  • Exceptional verbal and written presentation skills; and
  • Interpretation of bylaws, maps, legal documents, land title information and relevant legislation.

 
The RDEK offers an attractive total compensation package, which includes a competitive salary, excellent benefits, a modified workweek and learning opportunities. This is a permanent, full-time (35 hours per week), Union position with an hourly rate of $43.43 - $49.83/hour (depending on qualifications and experience).
