Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:45 PM (Nine-Day Fortnight)

This is technical, preliminary design and field work performed in the Traffic Division of the Engineering Department. This position investigates traffic problems and complaints, performs traffic field studies, prepares preliminary designs for new or modified traffic signal systems, oversees and assists in the maintenance and repair of traffic signals, makes periodic site inspections during the installation of traffic signals, verifies monthly invoices related to street lighting and traffic signal operation and maintenance; reviews and approves driveway crossings, development permit plans, street occupancy requests and other applications for traffic considerations, receives and reviews operational proposals from external agencies affecting traffic; prepares and maintains a variety of records, files, reports and correspondence and responds to inquiries from internal and external contacts. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of a certificate program in civil technology including courses related to traffic engineering and traffic signal systems design plus sound related experience in traffic signal maintenance or systems design, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the practices, methods, techniques and equipment used in traffic engineering operations, including related computer software applications. Sound knowledge of the City's street layout and municipal by-laws as related to the work performed. Working knowledge of traffic engineering design principles and practices. Ability to review plans, investigate issues, collect, summarize, analyze and interpret data and prepare reports complete with recommendations; to perform drawing and drafting assignments, make calculations, utilize computer software applications and perform clerical and recordkeeping tasks; to monitor the operation of traffic signals and to supervise and assist in the maintenance, repair and installation of traffic signal systems; to deal effectively with the public in handling complaints and responding to inquiries; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. A valid Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
