Planner IA (Community Sustainability)


Do you have a passion for engaging with the public and working to develop policies that facilitate the realization of community and corporate sustainability & climate resilience? The Developmental Services Department is looking for an experienced and customer service focused Planner who is open to the challenges of sustainability planning in rural and resort communities. This position is based out of our Cranbrook Office.

Reporting to the Planning Supervisor, the Planner IA will be responsible for annual local government climate action program (LGCAP) reporting, leading Climate Action Plan implementation, managing comprehensive sustainability and community planning projects, facilitating community engagement and preparing reports and recommendations for the Board of Directors.
 
The ideal candidate will have experience in sustainability & climate resilience planning, leading public engagement and facilitating dialogue with First Nations, the public and stakeholders in complex planning projects such as OCP reviews.

As the successful candidate, you have:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Planning
  • Eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of BC
  • Two years experience, including one year environmental planning;
  • This position includes a strong focus on climate initiatives.


Preference may be given to candidates with experience and education related to environmental planning, including familiarity with climate change adaptation, greenhouse gas reduction initiatives and environmentally sensitive lands.

Key Skills & Abilities:

  • Designing & implementing engagement processes utilizing in person and virtual opportunities;
  • Maintain composure and find solutions when dealing with contentious issues;
  • Application of sustainability principles for community & corporate initiatives, including measuring & reporting of greenhouse gas emissions);
  • Respond to public, Board and media inquiries in a professional manner;
  • Exceptional verbal and written presentation skills; and
  • Interpretation of bylaws, maps, legal documents, land title information and relevant legislation.


The RDEK offers an attractive total compensation package, which includes a competitive salary, excellent benefits, a modified workweek and learning opportunities. This is a permanent, full-time (35 hours per week) Union position with an hourly rate of $44.72, with an increase to $46.95/hour after a successful probation period.
