Surrey Police Service (SPS) is Surrey’s new municipal police agency. The transition from the RCMP to SPS is well underway and SPS has spent the past three years building a local, modern, accountable police service for Surrey residents. On November 29, 2024, SPS will become the police of jurisdiction, assuming responsibility for policing and law enforcement in Surrey.

About the Role
SPS is looking for a dynamic Occupational Health Nurse (Exempt) to join their team! Reporting to the Inspector, Human Resources in the Support Services Bureau, the Occupational Health Nurse will work closely with members from the Human Resources and Employee Services sections in facilitating a culture of health, safety, and wellness in the development, maintenance, and delivery of compliant and prevention-focused strategies and programs, as well as proactively supporting early intervention and return to work programs for ill and/or injured employees. The incumbent will coordinate issues related to sick or injury related absences, LTD and WCB to ensure all parties are aware of expectations, outcomes and recommendations going forward. Responsibilities also include reviewing fit for duty or restrictions concerns, consulting and interpreting medical information, preparing and advising on strategies, obtaining appropriate documentation to resolve conflicting medical information and initiating requests for third party independent medical testing as required, liaising with professionals on employee health issues and ability to work, managing complex workers’ compensation and non- occupational disability management claims and communicating with staff regarding restrictions and solutions keeping with best practice, collective agreements, human rights legislations and duty to accommodate legislation.

This work requires a strong customer service focus and care-based approach based on the individualized support for the employees, balanced by the needs of the organization including risk-mitigation, policy compliance, and legal jurisprudence. Strong communication skills, efficiency and thoroughness, initiative, and build relationships with insurance carriers and Worker’s Compensation to represent SPS in hearings. Excellent customer service skills, resilient and adaptable in stressful and high priority situations is considered an asset.

The successful incumbent will have completed a registered nursing program recognized by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), passed the National Council Licensure Examination, and meet the registration requirements set out by BCCNM. In addition, a minimum of five (5) years related nursing experience including experience in prevention/rehabilitation, managing return to work issues and/or biohazard exposure response. Additional course work in occupational health, rehabilitation, legislation related to disability management, human resource management/labour relations is considered an asset. A valid BC Driver’s license with a clean driving abstract provided within 30 days within the date of application is required.

This position is exempt. The 2024 salary range for this position is $104,807 to $123,302.
