Operations Technician


The Regional District of Mount Waddington (RDMW) is seeking an Operations Technician to join the Operations Department based in Port McNeill, BC. Working under the supervision of the Operations Engineer, the Operations Technician supports various projects related to water treatment and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, solid waste, fire protection, and transportation infrastructure services.

This is a union position with a 35-hour work week, with a rate of pay of $34.87 per hour and includes a competitive benefit plan. The position is as per the role and wage of Step 4 in the RDMW Collective Agreement and is based out of the RDMW’s office located at 2044 McNeill Road, Port McNeill, BC.

DUTIES:
  1. Conducts civil infrastructure work related to water, wastewater, solid waste, transportation, and fire protection services in remote communities with limited local resources.
  2. Plans, communicates, and executes projects from initiation to closeout, in coordination with senior Operations staff.
  3. Obtains, analyzes, tracks, and reports regulated service data, key performance indicators, and pilot project information.
  4. Undertakes site visits, performs assessments, and provides project status updates where required.
  5. Responds and provides technical assistance to the public, internal staff, and external stakeholders regarding service inquiries or complaints.
  6. Directs diverse operational practices from health and safety to extended producer responsibility programs.
  7. Advises operational staff and contractors on technical and regulatory matters pertaining to utility, solid waste, fire protection and transportation services.
  8. Assists in developing operational guidelines, policies, and safe work practices to ensure proper governance and mitigate occupational hazards.
  9. Takes part in matters pertaining to capital asset management, including inventory updates and reporting.
  10. Conducts reviews of utility plans and applications to determine policy and regulatory conformance.
  11. Keeps detailed records and ensures quality management practices are followed.
  12. Assists in preparing for public and advisory committee meetings. Represents the RDMW and updates senior leadership.
  13. Prioritizes operational duties, projects, and emerging issues. Proactively reviews, and documents risks or liabilities and escalates concerns to senior staff.
  14. Performs other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
A technical diploma from a recognized institution with respect to engineering technology or related discipline is preferred. Experience working in a project/program management capacity, in a local government environment, and with knowledge, use and experience in matters pertaining to, water, wastewater, solid waste, fire protection, and transportation services is an asset.

  • Be organized and complete tasks and projects efficiently;
  • Undertake complex technical research and analysis;
  • Attend distant and outdoor sites in a variety of weather conditions for the purpose of undertaking field work;
  • Accurately read technical plans and documents.
  • Be proficient in the use of computers and related software; and,
  • Have a valid BC Driver's Licence and clean driver abstract.
