GIS Technician

A 12-month temporary full-time position is available for a GIS Technician to work within our Information Technology Department. The successful incumbent will participate in the maintenance of the GIS by performing a variety of duties related to the assembly and maintenance of geographic data and associated attributes, and the production of maps, data summaries, and related information. The incumbent will be expected to exercise some independence of judgement and action in performing the more routine assignments, referring more difficult or unusual problems to a superior. Attention to detail and the ability to follow direction through documented procedures are necessities for the successful candidate.
 
The successful candidate will:

  • Prepare and revise maps for a variety of projects using ArcGIS Pro.
  • Migrate legacy ArcMap documents to ArcGIS pro and assist with the modernization of GIS processes.
  • Research, compile, enter, and edit spatial data and associated non-spatial attribute information from legal plans, engineering drawings, orthoimagery, and related documentation.
  • Participate in integrating various databases and information files in GIS format; update and reconcile data, amend data dictionaries.
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS software suite, especially ArcGIS Pro, and the ability to navigate the software with little guidance. Familiarity with Esri field maps and FME Desktop would be considered an asset.
  • Have the ability to diligently follow documented procedures, as well as think independently.
  • Possess sound knowledge of GIS principles.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships and communicate effectively with staff across the organization.
  • Possess excellent problem-solving skills, a strong attention to detail, and an enthusiasm for tackling problems and mastering solutions.


Qualifications
Completion of a diploma program in engineering, geography, or a related discipline supplemented by completion of a geographic information system post diploma program at an Institute of Technology, plus some related experience, OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid BC Driver’s License is required.

Salary:
The pay range for this unionized position is $34.63 to $40.74 per hour (2024 rates)
Hours of Work: 35-hour work week (Compressed work schedule available)
