POSITION DETAILS:                       
TITLE: Landscape Maintenance Person
DEPARTMENT: Municipal Services
CURRENT RATE OF PAY: $38.07 per hour plus 15% in lieu of benefits
HOURS OF WORK: Seasonal Employment – Approximately March to November each year (1440 hours), 40 hours per week, shift work and overtime as required including evenings/weekends.
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs skilled gardening work of a relatively complex nature, under the general supervision of the Parks Foreman.  Work involves the culture of natural and ornamental plants, shrubs, trees and hedges; care, repair, fertilization and mowing of turf; application of herbicides and pesticides to control weeds, disease, and insect infestation in City parks, boulevards and Cemetery, and on other City properties; and the provision of supervision to labourers and others assigned to maintenance/gardening horticulture activities.
 
SUPERVISION:
The incumbent is responsible to the Director of Municipal Services under the direction of the Parks Foreman and/or designate.
 
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Shall be responsible for all aspects of park clean up and maintenance.
  • Shall assist the parks foreman in the daily operation of the Parks Division.
  • Shall be responsible for picking up from and at the job site, materials, supplies and equipment as required.
  • Shall be knowledgeable in all aspects of parks related equipment and operating and maintenance of same.
  • Shall perform specific duties to include grass cutting, seeding, pruning, planting of flower beds, shrubs, etc. as required.
  • Shall exercise care to ensure safety of others and equipment at all times.
  • Shall be knowledgeable in all aspects of safety regulations in effect.
  • Shall be capable of understanding, report verbally, by written report in English, and accepting and comprehending verbal instruction.
  • Shall have the desire and initiative to undertake additional training in the correct operation of equipment as well as upgrading of skills and abilities.
  • Sets out plants, applies fertilizers and compost to flower beds and digs or cultivates as required.  Carries out turf and landscape cleanup and lawn care; turf repairs, aerating fields and parks, seeding, sodding, fertilizing, top dressing and mowing as required.  Prunes and plants trees and shrubs in City parks, boulevards and Cemetery; applies tree dressing where necessary.
  • Sprays or dusts trees, shrubs, lawns and plant life in all City parks, boulevards and Cemetery with herbicides and pesticides using tractor drawn spray equipment or portable backpack units.
  • Controls rodents, insects, nests, etc. as required.
  • Works on landscape developments and renovations of sports fields, parks and boulevards.
  • Provides supervision to labourers assigned to assist with gardening activities as required.
  • Drives City vehicles to and from job site as required, and operates equipment related to parks maintenance and landscape operations as required including tractors and attachments, riding mowers, loaders, etc.
  • Answers questions and inquiries from the public regarding gardening and pest control practices.
  • Undertakes maintenance of indoor plants in City buildings as directed.
  • Reports horticultural and parks related deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Other duties as may be assigned to assist with the City’s day to day operations.

 
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Considerable knowledge of horticultural activities, including pruning techniques.
  • Certified knowledge and experience in the use of spraying equipment and the application of herbicides and pesticides.
  • Considerable experience in the use of garden tools and must be proficient and safely operate the following equipment within the Parks Division:
    • tractors/implements
    • mowers
    • light trucks
    • water truck
    • loaders and attachments including front end of backhoe, and
    • other horticultural related equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in interpreting blueprints and following planting instructions.
  • Skill in horticulture practices of landscaping, gardening, tree care, etc.
  • Ability to exercise courtesy and tact in the exchange of routine information with other City employees and the public.
  • Ability to exercise verbal and written instructions read and understands blueprints and sketch plan details.
  • Computer and word processing experience including proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Minimum five (5) years in municipal park work or equivalent with references.
  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent.  Must have training, experience and certification in the safe application of pesticides and herbicides.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or technical training course in horticulture.
  • B.C. Driver's Licence - Class 5 with Air Endorsement.
  • Pesticide applicator's certificate
  • Diploma or certificate of horticultural training from a recognized institution
