FireSmart Coordinator/Deputy Emergency Program Coordinator


Exempt Staff- Temporary Full Time to June 2026

Possibility of extension pending continued grant funding.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Prevention and Training, the FireSmart/DEP Coordinator is responsible for the facilitation of FireSmart and Emergency Preparedness related activities within the District of Kitimat and Kitamaat Village. This position will ensure that the FireSmart activities and the emergency program are supported through, developed, and implemented in accordance with provincial and municipal guidelines as well as with the direction and policy provided by the Haisla Nation and the District of Kitimat Fire Department.

Primary duties and responsibilities of the position include:

  • Act as the single point of contact for the Haisla Nation and the District of Kitimat Fire Department FireSmart Program.
  • Organize, plan and participate in events to accomplish the goal of fuel mitigation and educating the public about the FireSmart Principals.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the FireSmart Canada Neighborhood Recognition Program.
  • Provide FireSmart recommendations to homeowners to reduce the wildfire hazards on their properties by conducting site visits and conducting FireSmart Home Ignition Zone assessments.
  • Conduct FireSmart Home Ignition Zone Mitigation work as required.
  • Facilitate FireSmart 101 sessions through the District of Kitimat and Haisla Nation.
  • Recruit, supervise, coordinate, and provide training for FireSmart personnel to meet the principles of FireSmart Mitigation and Education.
  • Review assessments and reports prepared by FireSmart personnel to ensure compliance with program requirements.
  • Attend Conferences, wildfire preparedness days, community events, etc. to engage with the public and distribute information regarding the FireSmart principals and emergency preparedness.
  • Create a FireSmart working group with the District of Kitimat and Haisla Nation host monthly conference calls.
  • Represent the Haisla Nation and District of Kitimat Fire Department at various events to support the FireSmart and Emergency Preparedness Programs.
  • Attend training or workshops related to FireSmart and Emergency Preparedness.
  • Act as the Emergency Program Coordinator in the absence of the Fire Chief/Emergency Program Coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Applicants will have the following skills and abilities:

  • 2 years related leadership experience including supervisory, facilitation and contract management experience.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License and be proficient in towing a trailer.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record check.
  • Understanding of forest practices, FireSmart education, and wildfire mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention, FireSmart and emergency preparedness programs.
  • Knowledge of fire and public safety education, fire service operation, and emergency management.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft and social media application software.
  • Must be able to attain Wildfire Mitigation Specialist qualifications.
  • Must be skilled in the use of hand tools and equipment, ladders, heights, towing trailers, and other motorized equipment.
  • Physically able to perform the duties of the position indoors and outdoors at various work sites.
  • Able to effectively deliver educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.
  • Able to use information technologies (computers, mobile devices, etc.) including familiarity with presentation development tools, education programs, and social media applications.

  • Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) Training
  • Wildfire Risk Reduction Basics Course
  • Fire Life and Safety Educator
  • ICS-100
  • S-100 Basic fire suppression and safety
  • Introduction to Emergency Management in Canada
  • Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility Training


This position is 35 hours a week and is paid $43.00 per hour and an additional 5 percent in lieu of benefits.
