A Regular Full-Time opportunity exists within the Parks Department for a Trades 2 Carpenter. This is skilled carpentry work at high level in the maintenance and construction of District Park Buildings, structures, playgrounds and facilities. In addition, an employee of this class performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled painting, roofing, brick and tile laying, cement finishing and minor electrical and plumbing repair tasks in the construction and maintenance of buildings. An incumbent exercises considerable independence of action and judgment in completing most assignments and may direct the work of one or more helpers when required. Oral and written instruction may be accompanied by sketches/blueprints and are received from a superior who reviews work performance in terms of good workmanship and conformance to established standards and budget.

The successful applicant must possess a thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade, sound knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in painting, roofing, form setting, cement finishing and brick and tile laying, working knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in plumbing and electrical repair work; sound knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the work; ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled trades construction and maintenance tasks with minimal supervision; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work from sketches and blueprints; ability to supervise the work of one or more helpers as required; skilled in the use and care of a variety of power and hand tools, materials and equipment.

Qualifications
Completion of Grade 10 supplemented by related technical courses and completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade plus sound related journeyman experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A certificate in CSA Playground Inspection is desirable. The incumbent must hold a Journeyman Certificate in Carpentry or have equivalent certification and have a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License. Preference will be given to candidates who have job costing and budget experience.

Details
The pay for this unionized position is $45.92 per hour (2024 rates) based on a 40-hour work week.
