Responsibilities
PRIMARY PURPOSE 
The technical investigation and analysis of failures and other technical problems related primarily to the Revenue Fleet and Wayside Elements. Explores options and makes recommendations on alternative parts, repairs or procedures. Performs trend and cost benefit analyses. Prepares technical evaluation reports on specific mechanical problems and their solutions.
 
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES    

  • Investigates part, system and sub-system failures and other technical procedural problems encountered in the Revenue Fleet and Wayside Assets department, including assessment of the parts involved, in-depth analysis of the mechanical performance of fleet vehicles and mechanical guideway elements; and definition and coordination of tests to be conducted internally or by manufacturers or consulting engineers.
  • Analyzes the results of the investigation to identify the cause of problems and explores various options to resolve problems; researches alternative equipment/supplies; prepares cost-benefit analysis of repairs, replacement, etc. and recommends the best alternative to the Senior Engineer.
  • In conjunction with engineers, develops mechanical design specifications for special parts and equipment and tests prototypes.
  • Conducts qualitative analyses of mechanical vendors to assess their qualifications for supplying parts and equipment required by the department; develops and communicates specifications to vendors and within established budget, approves the supplier and the purchase of specific parts/equipment.
  • Audits and analyzes efficiencies and effectiveness of inspections.
  • Forecasts future unresolved issues within Revenue Fleet and Wayside Element.
  • Analyzes data collected by the Engineering Asset’s test train and makes recommendations to be ultimately passed on to the respective Maintenance Department.
  • Investigates perceived problems such as discrepancies in parts shipments and resolves concerns.
  • Coordinates Engineering Asset’s mechanical tests and supports mechanical test equipment as required on the test train.


Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

  • Mechanical Technologist diploma; must be eligible to be registered as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT) with Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC (ASTTBC)
  • Five (5) years’ experience, preferably in transportation, in technical analysis of parts and performance or in engineering in a manufacturing or production environment.

 
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Solid ability to investigate the cause of performance problems in vehicles, to develop part specifications and to liaise with suppliers in the development, testing and supply of parts and equipment.
  • Solid ability to develop and design concepts and draft CAD drawings for equipment adaptations is required.
  • Solid communication skills to write and deliver well-prepared comments, procedures, reports and presentations.
  • Experience in the technical analysis of parts and performance. Demonstrated computer skills.
  • Solid ability to develop and design concepts and draft drawings for equipment adaptations is an asset.
  • Solid interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.

Recruitment Process: An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process. A standard interview format will be used including general, scenario and behavioural descriptive interview questions.  

Work Schedule
40 hours per week.

Rate of Pay
Salary $81,447 - $101,809 Per annum (Actual salary offered will be commensurate with education, experience and internal parity).
