Abstract:
New street banners are planned for installation in Kamloops, the design reflecting shared community values between the City of Kamloops and Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc, according to the city.

A recent report to city council said communications teams and graphic designers from both governments met to design and complete the banners.

Discussions about the project actually began four years ago, but some staff and departmental changes resulted in the design process being put on hold.

The joint project started up again in summer 2020 with new ideas and a new vision, according to city staff.

A statement from Lyle Paul, former communications and event coordinator for Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc and banner design artist, is included in the city report.

"The purpose of this banner project was to show Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc and the City of Kamloops' togetherness," Paul said.

Paul said he focused on a design featuring Mount Paul and Mount Peter, as they are significant and easily recognizable landmarks for both Tk'emlúps and the City of Kamloops.

Logos for both governments use blue and yellow, so these colours were also featured in the design.
Paul said he used a rectangle shape to focus attention on the text, the name both communities share: Tk'emlúps and Kamloops.

According to the city, they are currently mapping high traffic locations on the north and south shores to pick locations for the banners.

Banners may also be installed on reserve lands, and the city said Tk'emlúps te Secwepemc would cover those associated expenses.

They are expecting to install the banners in summer 2021.
