Abstract:
On September 19, 2007, the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement was signed between the survivors of the schools, the federal government and churches involved in the residential school system. One of the outcomes of this agreement was the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The TRC was officially launched on June 1, 2008 with the mandate to inform Canadians of the residential school system and its legacy. Seven national events were held across Canada between June of 2010 and March of 2014. At these events, residential school survivors provided testimony, many speaking aloud for the first time about their experiences. Community members and families witnessed and honoured the truth and power of their words and the commission kept record so that we, as a nation, will not forget. To keep this record safe, accessible, and sustained, the National Research Centre for Truth and Reconciliation was established at the University of Manitoba in 2013. In June 2015, the TRC released its final report, which included the ninety-four, frequently referred to and too often sidestepped, Calls to Action (www.trc.ca, 2015).
