Abstract:
This discussion paper introduces decision makers (local and provincial) and community members to the concept of collaborative watershed governance. It discusses the benefits and risks inherent in shared decision-making, and ways to manage them. At a time in BC’s history when the Water Sustainability Act is making it possible for more regional organizations to take up responsibilities for their waters, the paper explores best practices for designing and operating them successfully.

One of the most useful parts of the paper are the BC case studies of organizations that have been addressing local health and environmental challenges through improved water management at the watershed scale. Each one includes a section on background, mandate, roles and responsibilities, and funding, allowing readers to compare how different models have played out in specific contexts.
