Port Moody Hosts Car-Free Day Celebration

City of Port Moody

PORT MOODY - Port Moody invites residents and visitors to the city’s first-ever Car-Free Day on Sunday, August 20, 2017. This community celebration, filled with local businesses and artisans, delicious food, live music, and activities for all ages, will take place on St. Johns Street, between Douglas and Moody streets, from 12 noon to 7pm.

“On behalf of the City, I’m excited to announce an inaugural Port Moody celebration,” said Mayor Mike Clay. “Come down to St. Johns Street for fun, food, and a festive atmosphere, with things to see and do for all ages. The City is pleased to support our local businesses, who add so much to our community, and showcase alternative modes of transportation.”

Car-Free Day is a community celebration featuring:

  • live music, including folk-rock artist Greg Drummond, and The Rhythm Method, an eight-piece R&B, funk, pop, and rock band that plays hits from the ’60s right through to today;
  • great food, available from local restaurants;
  • Brewers Row Beer Garden at Queens Street Plaza;
  • family-friendly activities, like rock climbing, street hockey, face painting, and a bicycle skills and safety zone;
  • roving entertainers and mascots;
  • displays presented by local businesses and artisans; and
  • electric vehicle demonstrations.

St. Johns Street, between Douglas and Moody streets, will be closed to all vehicle traffic from 6am to 10pm on August 20, 2017. Commuters are strongly advised to take alternative routes. On-street parking in the area will be extremely limited, so the City asks residents and visitors who will be attending Car-Free Day to consider alternative ways to get to the celebration: walk, bike, or take public transit.

Please visit portmoody.ca/carfreeday for more information. Business owners or operators interested in reserving a booth can fill out an application form online. Forms must be submitted by July 31, 2017. Car-free days take place across the country and aim to inspire people to get out of their cars, interact with each other, and explore alternative modes of transportation.
