Expression of Interest - Sound Artist in Residence


Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and to sports, recreation and arts amenities. The West Vancouver Memorial Library is seeking a Sound Artist in Residence to engage with the West Vancouver community and inspire them to work on projects in our newly opened Recording Studio.  The Sound Artist in Residence will give visibility to our Studio through in-library programming, consultation with the community, and creative works.  We welcome applications from all types of sound artists, including songwriters, musicians, and producers.

As a hub for music and community-building, the West Vancouver Memorial Library is known for its popular Friday Night Concert series, music lectures, and robust music programming.  Our Recording Studio is host to a Control Room, Live Room, and great collection of audio recording software and equipment.  We have both a grand piano and electric piano onsite.

The Library is located in West Vancouver’s Ambleside neighbourhood, on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Squamish Nation, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, and Musqueam Nation. Steps from the Library is the Seawalk, with scenic views of Burrard Inlet, the Coast Mountains, the Vancouver skyline, and ships travelling under the Lions Gate Bridge.  The Sound Artist in Residence is expected to spend an estimated 25-50% of the residency time will onsite at the Library.

This full-time contract requires 50 percent of the Artist’s time be spent on Library programs or projects; leaving 50 percent of the residency time available for working on their own self-directed creations.

Responsibilities

  • Spend time working on your own project(s).
  • Plan and lead events and workshops for WVML patrons, including seniors – these may include lectures, classes, workshops, demos, mentoring, individual consultations, etc.
  • Foster the growth of the West Vancouver Memorial Library Recording Studio community and help build that community’s knowledge base. 
  • Inspire and empower community members in their musical endeavours. 
  • Share creations produced in the Recording Studio on the Library’s website and social media.  


Requirements

  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • Professionally active in your artistic community
  • In the early working stage of a new project
  • Comfortable interacting with members of West Vancouver’s community, including seniors
  • Comfortable participating in media opportunities to promote the residency, the West Vancouver Memorial Library, and sound recording in Canada


Contract Terms

  • 3-month contract, mid-August through mid-November (these dates can be flexible if required by the successful applicant)
  • $12,000 remuneration ($4,000 per month on a self-employed basis)
  • When the Sound Artist is working onsite in West Vancouver, they will be responsible for finding their own accommodation and transportation
