Reporting to the IT Director Infrastructure, the Database Administrator is responsible for planning, designing, developing, installing, maintaining and optimizing the City’s corporate database systems. An incumbent will provide technical assistance and liaise with user departments regarding database requirements and procedures; examines users’ current workflow and recommends improvements. An incumbent assists in business cases to support optimization and enhancements; participates in developing database policies and long-range planning. An incumbent coordinates shared usage of data throughout the City. An incumbent establishes standards and procedures for all computerized data files; architects and builds High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions for databases; reviews and approves all proposed database designs, conversions and data loads or unloads, and apply testing and implements the configuration related to the hardening of IT infrastructure systems. An incumbent coordinates and participates in projects as to the acquisition and implementation of approved database management technologies; prepares request for proposal and evaluates vendors, plans and coordinates the installation of new software releases; prepares work schedules and deadlines; monitors project workloads and backlogs. An incumbent provides estimates for capital and operating budgets and variances for database systems and servers; processes licence renewals, monitors and maintains licence records and compliance; keeps abreast of developments in database management tools, equipment, software and related matters; prepares and maintains a variety of records, reports and correspondence. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include degree in computer science, plus courses in database management and five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. This role requires thorough knowledge of: the principles and techniques involved in database design and management; the operations and functions of all departments and their requirements. The role also requires the ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal contacts and to provide advice and assistance; analyze and evaluate various data and information requirements; prepare detailed designs for all databases; establish standards and procedures for all computerized data files; troubleshoot, evaluate and monitor the performance of all databases and related applications to ensure data integrity and security; coordinate projects and work with cross-functional teams and to establish priorities, schedule workload to meet deadlines and project objectives. The role also requires skill in the use of software applications. Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) or equivalent (e.g. Oracle Certified Professional). A Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
