2002 September - Quesnel's New City Hall - Lessons Learned

Posting Date: February 3, 2009

Abstract:
Charles A. Hamilton, City Manager, City of Quesnel
This paper examines the frontline management challenges that emerged as a consequence of the City of Quesnel's decision to acquire a prominent landmark building located in the downtown commercial core. The City's intention was to renovate the building for use as a new city hall and regional library and to revitalize the city's downtown core. The project began to face problems when it was realized that the cost to renovate the building would be significantly higher than originally anticipated. The purpose of the paper is to promote discussion on the importance of good project management practices when planning and delivering a large and complex capital project.
